Dear Editor,
Recently, I wrote a letter to the editor of Kaieteur News on the subject “Bad engineering, drains and roads construction in Linden Town. First, I am not being provocative but it seems our engineers, contractors, regional and town representatives forget their responsibilities to the citizens and taxpayers of Linden.
About four years ago a road between Figgie Entertainment Centre and the Winifred Gaskin Highway which separates Wisroc from Block 22, has since broken up.
About one year ago, the re-construction of a new road began; the design of the drains is a marvel which confuses people with its curves and turns that are unnecessary and a hindrance to the free flow of water.
Road building material, a mixture of laterite and sand was thrown often, but it keeps washing away when it rains heavily.
At present, that road is very muddy and is unusable. I recommend that the Minister of Works or his lieutenants travel to Linden Town to have a first-hand observation of that project and many others, in order to understand the cries of a people who feel neglected so much and so long.
“Under the Microscope”, a locally produced NCN Programme presented by a Lindener, had been the only television programme that brought out the ills we suffer from time to time.
That programme has long gone, the NCN Linden News, most of its time is spent on coverage of court issues.
Our young people need to see and learn the history of Linden Town. They spend much of their time looking at Mickey Mouse and the American way of life.
Do they know what year the Wismar Housing Scheme was build? Which was the first high school in the town of Linden?
What was Christianburg’s name before and how it got its name? Do they know that Christianburg had a governor and what was his name? How did Wismar get its name?
NCN Linden needs to bring to Lindeners, programmes that could teach us something interesting. A Linden Town history park was established at the old R H Carr Steamer Stelling or Sprostons Wharf, but the cutting of the grass in order to enhance its appearance is a very serious problem.
Linden Town has a history of firsts in Guyana, for example the first bridge across the Demerara River (The Hope Bridge), first Bauxite Company (Demba), first Alumina Plant, first Water-wheel, first Aluminium houses, the amateur boxer to represent Guyana at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico (Charles Shortie Amos) and the list goes on and on.
Lindeners, fellow countrymen, let’s take leave from the politics and do what is necessary for our development.
Let’s look around and ask ourselves as individuals, “Have I done enough for the development of Linden Town?” If your answer is NO! Start NOW! Remember, it’s not what your country can do for you, it’s what you could do for your country.
