An object that was initially thought to be debris from a plane was said to more accurately resemble a space rocket component.
Head of the Civil Aviation Authority Zulficar Mohamed told Kaieteur News that a report was received at around midday yesterday that a large “plane part” had washed up on the Mahaica, East Coast Demerara foreshore.
The object that was retrieved from the Mahaica foreshore.
Mohamed mentioned that there had been no recent report of a plane crash or regional crash and this limited the possibility of it being related to a plane. Mohamed told Kaieteur News that the possibility exists that the debris could be from a rocket launched at the Guiana Space Centre, near Kourou in French Guiana.
The Centre is the spaceport used by the European Space Agency (ESA) to send supplies to the International Space Station using the Automated Transfer Vehicle. It also includes human space flights, a Google search of the agency related.
Mohamed told Kaieteur News that the Authority will retrieve the debris. Reports say that another piece of debris was also located in the area.
