DEAR EDITOR,
The other day I was speaking to a friend of mine of a younger generation, and who is quite a wizard in IT operations, while I, on the other hand, am an unfashionable insouciant.
What made me feel, if only for a brief moment, on equal terms with his expertise, was when I discovered he did not know what the abbreviation “cc” stood for. He quite understood what it was intended to achieve – that is to send copies of correspondence to parties other than the primary addressees, but the actual translation of cc, i.e. “Carbon Copy” was totally alien to him.
Like several still young generations, he had never seen or heard of ‘carbon’ paper – which was used to duplicate hand and type-written documentation, and to complete various types of forms.
Not that ‘carbon’ sheets are not now available. Some entrepreneur must still be importing stocks. Just go to your local post office and see how widely (and slowly) used they are!! E. B. John
