A group of armed pirates attacked and robbed two boatloads of 11 fishermen on Tuesday during a daring daylight attack. The incident occurred in the Corentyne River in the vicinity of Coronie, Suriname. Three fishermen, ‘Bucko’ from Number 67; ‘Speedy’ from Tain; and ‘Pork Soup’ from Tain, Corentyne (only names given) are now missing as a result of the attack.
Details of the attack are sketchy, but this newspaper was informed that one boat had six fishermen while the other had five. They had left Number 66 Fisheries on Friday.
Acting Chairman of the Upper Corentyne (#66) Fishermen’s Co-operative, Parmeshwar Jainarine, stated that while no official report has been lodged to the Co-operative, the remaining eight fishermen, who were very traumatized arrived at Number 66 Village just after 14:30 hrs on Thursday and made a report at the Springlands Police Station.
“They put all the crew in one of the boats and drove away and left one fisherman in the other boat then destroyed the engine,” he said.
Jainarine said that he received unconfirmed reports of the hijacking on Wednesday and tried to make contact with Suriname police, who confirmed that the incident had indeed occurred. The Surinamese police then searched the area and found the eight fishermen.
The pirates carted off a quantity of fish, groceries and fuel.
Jainarine believes that the three fishermen are dead “and we do not know how to go to the families to tell them.”
“We are assuming they are dead,” he told this newspaper last evening. “We informed the Police and Coast Guard, and we called the Crime Chief and he told us to call the Commander.”
Police investigations are continuing.
