Dear Editor,
We the residents of North Coverden on the East Bank of Demerara, would like to send this open letter to the Commissioner of Police (ag).
Sir,
For the last six months we have been bombarded with very loud music emanating from a Service Station every Sunday afternoon and continuing way into Monday mornings.
We raised our concerns with the management of the gas station but to no avail. We even sent out letters to all the relevant agencies including your office. Sir, along with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Fire Service and Environmental Protection Agency but again to no avail for the noise continues unabated.
This noise was at first being played from customers’ cars and SUV’s which was very loud but from the past two months the music has been coming from one of those large music systems and even though the barbeque and lime is now held at a new location, the noise is more devastating for those large speakers are turned in our directions which makes it unbearable to stay in our homes.
On Sunday June 16th the noise commenced at 6pm and continued until 2:30am. On the 20th of June it was from 5pm until 2:30am. On the 24th of August a car and bike show was held. The music started at 4:30pm but the actual show started at 1:00am and concluded at 3:30am. Then on the 25th of August to add insult to injury the music started from 4:30pm and concluded at 1:50am and this was a result of having to make several calls to the Timehri Police.
Mr. Commissioner, we would like to make it abundantly clear, in that we bear no ill will or grudge (as is being touted) against anyone’s business and all we are asking is that we be allowed to enjoy the peace and tranquility of our homes and this includes the sick, the elderly and our school children.
It would be appreciated if a survey can be carried out during one of these sessions so that a firsthand experience can be realized in order for the way forward to be determined.
We would also appreciate the Disc Jockey could refrain from vulgarity, for we do have women and children living here. These people operate with impunity as if we don’t even exist, when we have lived here all our lives and we should not be asked to put our lives on hold every Sunday.
Many of us have already started to have ear problems as a result of being exposed to the constant banging for hours on end, when all that is needed to be done is re-arrange those speakers away from us for even the zinc sheets on our homes rattle, causing us more discomfort.
Then the DJ shouts and screams, you’ll believe he’s on a beach in the middle of nowhere. Pleased Mr. Commissioner, let Sanity and Peace prevail.
