WDRH woes…Lamp post collapses, causes power outage in pertinent wards

Midwives were forced to use the lights on their phones to carry out deliveries; while maids reporting for duty were blocked from entering their work stations after a lamp post collapsed and disrupted the generation of electricity to the several pertinent wards.
Kaieteur News understands that a lamp post near the northern shed of the hospital collapsed yesterday morning, tearing down the shed and leaving several departments without the necessary power.
This incident followed Monday’s protest, during which several staff nurses demonstrated their disapproval of the “decaying conditions at the West Demerara regional health institution.
Workers are once again calling upon the relevant authorities to have the matter urgently rectified so as to ensure safety of the workers and improved services for patients.
According to a report, at approximately 1:00 hour yesterday, a lamp post and a shed situated north of the health facility, came crashing to the ground with a loud “bang,” simultaneously resulting in the wards located in front of the shed, the Maternity, Male and Female surgical wards, being without electricity for hours.
This resulted in Midwives having to improvise to carry out a delivery. It also prevented other workers from having access to their relevant departments.
“There was a lot of sparks flying from the wires that fell from the post and this alarmed nurses and patients alike into thinking that the hospital was on fire.”
Monalisa Harris, supervising staff nurse on duty for the night shift, contacted several of her seniors, who after much wavering and deliberation directed her to the Deputy Regional Executive Officer, Adepmo Peters.
Peters promised to provide portable lamps to assist until a suitable solution can be found. “He arrived approximately two hours after the incident with two portable lamps and a fat candle for us to use,” one nurse said.
This publication understands that even as day broke, the nurses were left with the responsibility of calling the Electricity Company and informing them of the fallen lamp post as no one from the Hospital Administration staff had arrived to give the required advice.
The hospital staffers are insisting on the implementation of ensuring suitable security evaluations for workers and patients alike.
