Robin Persaud shaves 3 minutes off last year’s time

Flying Stars Cycle Club’s Robin Persaud stormed to victory in the 6th Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycle Road Race on the West Demerara yesterday and in the process shaved 3 minutes off last year’s winning time.
Persaud stopped the starter’s clock at exactly One Hour 56 Minutes 24 Seconds bettering last year’s One Hour 59 Minutes 24 Seconds set by Paul DeNobrega.
Reigning National Road Race champion Orville Hinds of the Linden Bauxite Flyers Club took the second place with Raynauth Jeffrey, Alonzo Greaves, Eric Sankar and John Charles closing out the third to sixth positions.
Persaud and Jeffrey shared two prime prizes each while Sankar, Andrew Reece, Paul Choo-Wee-Nam and Raymond Newton won one each. A total of 58-riders faced starter’s orders in the race that pedaled off at the Wales Police Station, proceeded to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Emerging as the top junior was Montel Anthony followed by Hamza Eastman and Mario King.
Kennard Lovell tool top honours in the veteran class; Ralph Williams took second and Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson third.
Naiomi Singh won the female category ahead of Hazina Barrett who suffered a puncture and also fell during the course of the race. Ozia Maculay, Stephano Husbands and Julio Melville finished in that order in the Mountain Bike category.
The Ladies, Veterans and Mountain Bike categories turned back at Uitvlugt.
Meanwhile, delivering remarks and assisting with the presentation were Dr. Beri Ramsarran and Mr. Haroon Hussein. The Dr. Cheddi Jagan Memorial Race series will conclude with the Essequibo leg of the race on Sunday March 24 with the 5th edition of the event in the Cinderella County.
