A 63 year-old woman who was nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Christmas Day has been remanded to prison after being charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The woman, Bhagwattie Seepaul, made her appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
It is alleged that on December 25, last, she had in her possession three kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The court was told that the woman, who migrated to Canada some 45 years ago, had the cocaine stashed in packets of Lalah’s curry powder, custard powder, and other condiments. She pleaded not guilty and was remanded to prison until January 8.
Meanwhile Kaieteur News was told that the woman informed investigators that a man identified only as ‘Alex’ met her at the Berbice car park and took her to an apartment on the West Coast of Demerara. The woman said that at the house, ‘Alex’ give her the items to take for relatives in Canada.
