Oct 10, 2012 Letters
Dear Editor,
On October 5, 2012 the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) celebrated fifty-five years of existence. The People’s National Congress Reform has emerged as the most democratic political entity in current day Guyana.
The actions of the PNCR, over the years, demonstrated that it is a party which always strove to put the interest of the people and country first. There are some who, for obvious reasons, will continue to bury their heads in the sand and pretend to be oblivious to this fact. However, it is interesting to note that while these ‘self-proclaimed historians’, ‘theorists’ and ‘political analysts’ may take time out to launch into their anti-PNCR tirade they have skillfully refused to advance any sound reasoning or state those facts which would counter my claim.
They have deliberately decided against identifying any other political party, in Guyana, which has surpassed the PNCR in advancing inter-party democracy.
I take time to identify Mr. Maxwell, who in a letter in the KN in August 2012, sought to claim that I was making a huge mistake to claim that the PNCR is the most democratic political entity in present day Guyana. While Mr. Maxwell spewed a lot of hogwash, in his letter, he failed to point out to me which other political organization my description should be ascribed to.
I wish to remind us that regardless of what are our views of the PNCR it is undeniable that it is a party which has demonstrated, through its actions, that the people and country are always placed above any narrow political interest.
The PNCR’s continuous efforts to strengthen its internal democracy cannot be ignored nor treated lightly and it would be naïve and mendacious for anyone, who consider himself or herself, fairly objective to claim otherwise.
The party’s recent, ‘primary-like’, method employed to elect its Presidential Candidate for the 2011 National and Regional Elections can be identified as one of the latest positive acts it undertook to aid in the further democratizing of its internal electoral process. While I am pleased and appreciative of what the party has accomplished so far, I believe like every other member that there is more to be done. We have not yet reached to the place where we all can say we have made it.
But what is certain is that the journey started some fifty-five years ago is definitely on a swifter path to creating a truly modern political movement aimed at meeting the needs of a changing global political environment.
Today, I write to congratulate the Peoples’ National Congress Reform, all its members and supporters for embracing a political organization with a rich history.
Happy fifty-fifth birthday PNCR!
