DEAR EDITOR,
I read the recent letter about Employee Performance Appraisal and gathered the writer is advising against line managers and supervisors reporting unfairly on those under their supervision. In other words, avoid using the annual report as a weapon, to blackmail or bully their charges.
I have seen this practice in action and the supervisors eventually lost their jobs. They were people who expected ‘oral shoeshines’ from underlings, and staff who refused to bend were sidelined. Such people
could never get the best out of others.
A supervisor in the public service once told me that she sometimes found Staff Appraisals said more about the writers than the people written about. And, of course, there is often a perverse and cunning reason for negative reporting. I worked with a supervisor who did this regularly to good-quality staff she did not want to lose. Who wants an incompetent employee? She played this to the max. It came to light eventually and she got her comeuppance. Be fair and justify your position. Geralda Dennison
