DEAR EDITOR,
The Kaieteur News in its March 19, 2012 publication carried a story headlined “Rohee cannot prevent $90M Audit”
As Minister of Home Affairs, I wish to make it very clear, that I am entitled to my opinion which I expressed openly in the National Assembly to the effect that I do not see the need for an audit into the $90M allocated to the Guyana Police Force to meet expenditure associated with the General and Regional Elections 2011.
A question was asked by a Member of the Opposition on the matter and I gave my candid opinion in response.
Now, the Kaieteur News has sought to introduce through a devious, wicked and malicious piece of journalism impugning that, in expressing my opinion I sought to prevent the Auditor General from doing whatever he wishes to do on this matter under the Laws of Guyana.
As far as I am concerned the Auditor General is free to conduct his affairs as he deems necessary. My response in the National Assembly had nothing to do with whether the Auditor General should or should not conduct an Audit into the matter.
Preventing the Auditor General from doing whatever he wishes to do in this matter never occurred to me.
It is to be regretted that the Auditor General allowed himself to be caught up in the wickedness of the Kaieteur News on this matter as it seeks to stoke the fire on the issue.
My information is that the Auditor General is already at work on the matter. I hope that every cent will be accounted for, and that save perhaps, for some breaches in accounting procedures the matter will be finally settled.
However, should anyone be found guilty of any malfeasance or journalistic mischief it is hoped that they will be made to answer to the public. Clement Rohee
