Night Crescendo owned and Trained by Senior Council Marcel Crawford shone brightly as it created a major upset to take away the $1M first prize and the feature B class event when the Kennard Memorial Turf Club successfully held the annual one day Phagwah horserace meet at the club’s entity, Bush Lot Farm Corentyne, Berbice last Sunday.
With the inclement weather easing off at the moment the authorities were able to bring off an incident free and successful day of racing in front of a fair size crowd. Running in fairly good condition still somewhat on the slow side due mainly to rains over the past months it was Night Crescendo that shone brightly.
The feature B class event, run over a distance of 7 furlongs with a first prize of $1,000,000 compliments of Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and the Seenauth Rampersaud Trophy, was an evenly contested race that went down to the wire. As the animals got out of the starting gates, a few showed early signs of leadership, but were quickly reined in by pack. Newly imported Mission King of the Elcock stable pulled out and looked good coming around the far turn, but just then the animal’s stirrup iron got loose and the racehorse had to ease off.
The battle continued though, into the home stretch with at least four horses lined out across the track, by then Night Crescendo with Jockey Rupert Ramnauth on the perch was making a move as it eased up on the front runners. Night Crescendo with the experience Ramnauth urging it on took full advantage of the bunch up situation to come through with blistering speed on the outside. With Ramnauth using his vast skills to guide his charge down the homestretch for a close win from Who So Ever, Grande De Roja and Fresh Again.
The Jumbo Jet stable chalked up the first two spots in the E and lower 6 Furlongs event, with the winning money being $400,000 with Home Bush Baby ridden by Trinidadian Praveen Badrie and Marathon Man ridden by another Trinidadian Nicholas Patrick doing the honours as Swing Easy and Night Crescendo occupied the other two positions.
Serenity of the Jumbo Jet stables made it two wins for that entity with victory over Settle in Seattle, Princess Kaira and Windy War in the 7 furlong race for three year old Guyana and West Indies Bred horses to capture the $400,000 first prize.
The G class 7 furlongs event was also a close race as Work Force with aging Jockey Desmond coming out of retirement working its way to victory by a whisker from Face the Fire, Damascus Dream and Sabrina’s Joy to take away the Kennard Memorial stakes with a top prize of $300,000.
There was some confusion and an eventual dead heat in the H class 6 furlongs event as Royal Salute with Patrick and Finishing Touch with Drepaul finished close and could not be separated for the $220,000 prize compliments of DDL. Quincy Girl and Dream Girl rounded out the money. The I2 6 furlong race saw Third World winning the $160,000 purse from De Gump, Apostle and Kevin.
Zebra was in winner’s row in the J and lower 6 furlongs event ahead of Its My Time, MacGyver and Silver Kid. The win was worth $120,000 and trophy.
The L class 5 Furlongs event with a first prize of $100,000 was taken by Lil Axe as it cut through its opponents to win from from Mine That Bird, Summer Time and Lady Secret.
The Champion Jockey was Rupert Ramnauth with Yap Drepaul being his runner up. The champion stable award went to Jumbo Jet Racing stable. They all received trophies and other accolades compliment Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and some other donors.
The day’s activity was by and large incident free. Close to $5.2M were up for grabs, which saw over 60 horses taking part. The next race meet on the Horse racing calendar is set for Sunday March 25 at the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club, Alness Corentyne.
