Dear Sir,
A short comment concerning Mr. Charles Ceres letter titled “Someone must be able to demonstrate that engineers are performing an engineering function in this country” published in the Kaieteur News dated March2, 2012.
Mr. Ceres, by stating that the revetment under construction at Hope East Bank Demerara will fail (before the end of its design life) has put his reputation on the line.
If it fails he can brag “I told you so” If it remains in place, the revetment designer can vilify Mr. Ceres, claiming he does not know what he is talking about, is a prophet of doom etc etc.
I remember well in the late 1990s an almost completed revetment at Charity failed. Part of the failed revetment is still visible to the left of the wharf when looking in the direction of the river.
It took about two days to just about disappear into the Pomeroon river and with it went the reputation of the designer, Mr Sanasie.
I would like to think that if this new revetment fails, the designer and those responsible for approving the design should suffer the same fate as Mr. P. Sanasie.
On the other hand, Mr. Ceres by making such a bold statement risks damage to his reputation in direct proportion to the life of the revetment. Edward Gonsalves
