Moen Gafoor out-spells rivals to win H H Halim General Contracting Open scrabble
Moen Gafoor endorsed the old idiom that advocates ‘perseverance is the key to success,’ and after finishing second best to James Krakowsky in several earlier tournaments, has finally ascended the podium in the prime position when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players staged the H H Halim General Contracting Company Open scrabble Championships at the Malteenoes Sports Club Thomas Lands yesterday morning.

Gafoor amassed 5 points and a positive spread of 468 to claim the top prize ahead of Leon Belony who amassed a similar amount of points but a lower spread of 190. Ewart Adams also chalked up five games but was relegated to the third place by dint of a lower positive spread of 133.
Maurice Munroe continued to show vast improvement and amassed 4 points and a positive spread of 218 to cart off the special prize for the best player outside the top ten ratings.
Gafoor opened his account with a decisive win over Michael Benjamin (65) and followed up with a 214 points victory over Grace Hercules. Leon Belony then checked his winning streak with a 9 spread victory on the stroke of lunch.
Undeterred, Gafoor returned after the lunch break and registered victories over Orlando Michael (14), Ewart Adams (175) and Abigail McDonald (9). Along with Gafoor, Belony’s other victims were Munru (127), Orlando Michael (65), McDonald (14), Adams (132) and Ulric Harris (107).
Adams enjoyed a successful pre-lunch session with victories over Delon Moffat (6), Harris (91) and McDonald (52).
Belony was his first post lunch victim (132) before the loss to Gafoor. He rebounded nicely with a close win over Colin Chichester (27) to end the day huddled among the top seeds. However, his low spread of 133 proved insufficient to overwhelm Gafoor and Belony.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport wishes to apologize to the proprietors of H H Halim General Contracting Company after inadvertently publishing the company under an incorrect name in an earlier release. The organizers of the GASP will release the date and other details for the other tournament on its calendar. However, the players will convene for the usual practice session at the Malteenoes Sports Club this and every Thursday evening from 19:00hrs.
