The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered that an inquest be conducted into the circumstances surrounding the death of 42 year-old Clive Chisholm at the Haags Bosch dumpsite at Eccles, East Bank Demerara. Chisholm was reportedly crushed by a truck.
Shortly after the incident, which occurred on December 15, last, the police had prepared a file containing statements from the driver of the truck, as well as eyewitnesses, and sent it to the DPP for advice. During the latter part of last week the file was sent back to the police ordering the inquest.
Further, as it relates to another aspect of the investigation, the Ministry of Labour had told this publication that legal action will be taken against Cevon’s Waste Management for a breach in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Minister Nanda Gopaul had informed Kaieteur News in early January that the Ministry had completed its investigations, hence the recommendations.
The Minister had explained that the company had failed to report the matter, despite the fact that it has a mandate to do so in any such situation. Gopaul had also indicated that the company had not made any effort to contact his Ministry, despite efforts by his officers to contact the entity’s management for information
Chisholm was employed as a porter with the company, and was also employed part-time with the Mayor and City Council.
There have been conflicting reports as to how the man met his demise. Persons have claimed that Chisholm had exited the truck and entered the pit, when the truck driver started to reverse. It is alleged that the driver was apparently unaware that the porter was near or behind the vehicle.
Kaieteur News understands that the truck driver did not know that his vehicle had crushed Chisholm until a bulldozer operator screamed out to him, indicating that the mishap had occurred. This publication was told that at the time, Chisholm was behind the truck urinating.
