-van Lange rewrites Stephenson’s 100m freestyle rec.
Continuing her superb work in the waters of the National Aquatic Centre (NAC) on day three of
the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) annual Mashramani Meet yesterday, Jessica Stephenson was able to record another CARIFTA qualifying time.
On day two of the GASA Meet, Stephenson attained her first qualifying time for this year’s CARIFTA Games in the girls 15-17 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:18.46 seconds. Her second qualifying time was recorded yesterday in her second appearance at the pool in the 50m breaststroke in 36 seconds. CARIFTA’s qualifying standard time for this event is 36.37 seconds.

h School rewrote Stephenson’s record in the girls 15-17 100m freestyle and also cataloged a new personal best time in the event. van Lange, who seems to be improving in every event she participates in at the GASA Meet, clocked 1:03.86 seconds to claim the event.
In an exciting tussle in the boys 13-14 50m breaststroke in the long course pool, Omari Dunn of Dorado Speed Swim Club (DSSC), who entered the event in seedtime of 40.32 seconds, gave his team mate, Hannibal Gaskin, a shock of his life to finish first in 39.54 seconds leaving the latter to end in 40.61 seconds. Both swimmers achieved personal best timings in the event.
DSSC swimmers dominated in the boys’ 13-140400m freestyle, with Gaskin winning the event bettering his seed time, lowering it to 4:55.55. Omar Adams who placed second in 5:34.93 took almost eleven seconds of his seed time; Dunn was third with 6:11.50 seconds.
Gaskin also won the boys 100m freestyle and butterfly events in 1:04.02 and 1:13.93 seconds respectively.
Accalia Khan, who is also a student of Bishops’ High School, achieved a new personal time of 52.38 seconds in the 50m breaststroke.
Onika George claimed two top positions in her category at the competition in the 100m freestyle (first) and 50m breaststroke (second) in 1:13.61 seconds and 47.75 seconds respectively,
Other personal times were accomplished by Joseph Seguina in the boys 15-17 100m butterfly (1:12.65 seconds), Daniel Scott in the boys 11-12 50m breaststroke in 52.38 seconds, Nkosi Beaton boys 9-10 100m freestyle in 1:31.09 seconds and Dylan Nurse in the boys 11 to 12 100m freestyle in 1:17.45 seconds.
The 50m Freestyle, will bring the curtains down today at the GASA competition at Guyana’s first 50m long course pool.
