as new charity aims to provide education for Pomeroon children
Corporate sponsors are being urged to get onboard a new project which is aimed at assisting children in the Pomeroon River. The Pomeroon Education Project, Inc. (PEP) is a charitable non-profit organization established under the laws of Maryland, USA, and registered in Guyana. Zena Bone, one of the founders of the project, recently sat down with Kaieteur News and outlined the objectives. Bone said that the mission of the organization is to assist children in the Pomeroon River area to reach their full potential by ensuring that they attend school and have the necessary resources to succeed.
The project came on stream approximately 10 years ago. She said that the primary focus for these years has been to provide transportation for children in the Akawini Creek area to attend school in Charity – some 20 miles downriver.
Bone told Kaieteur News that the organization has also been instrumental in providing computers, school supplies and uniforms to many of the students. She said that their cadre of students has managed to produce five teachers, three nurses, a second year University of Guyana student, and an entrepreneur who now runs a barbershop.
Many of the students, she said, have been successful at the Caribbean Examination Council examinations. Yet others have embarked on careers and are pursuing higher education opportunities. The project is entering a new phase. Recognizing that many of the school leavers in the area are left on their own, and oftentimes do not possess the skills necessary to become productive citizens, the project is in the process of providing vocational training to these students- ages 16 to 20.
Bone explained that the proposed curricula would comprise of training in Mechanics, Solar Mechanics, Agriculture, Aquaculture, Eco-tourism, and Husbandry. She said that the vision is to commence activities in June 2012.
Kaieteur News was told that PEP is funded entirely by donations from both individual and corporate sponsors.
Bone said that they are extremely grateful for the assistance that they have received over the years, but the new project will require even more funding “as we embark on the proposed vocation training for these children.”
She said that she has donated several acres of land to start this new project. Bone explained that currently, the organization needs building materials and office equipment. She has encouraged anyone who wants to be a part of this venture to make contact with her on zenafred@gmail.com.
