The much anticipated Guyana Police Force’s female riot unit may not be deployed for
the National Elections which is just four days away.
Kaieteur News understands that training of ranks, who were identified to form the unit, was halted three weeks ago. The Force is hoping that the ill-equipped unit will not be called upon during and after Monday’s General and Regional Elections.
A few weeks ago police reported that the female riot unit was taking shape with training ongoing every Friday at Police Headquarters, Eve Leary.
The unit, which is the brainchild of Commissioner Henry Greene, is made up of about 20 ranks headed by an Assistant Superintendent, and who were drawn from the various departments at Police Headquarters.
Training commenced in early October and it was anticipated that the unit would have been ready for the General and Regional Elections.
Apart from physical training, the unit is being prepared to deal with crowd control and crowd estimates among other basics.
However with the suspension of training, the general feeling is that the unit is not adequately prepared for the intended tasks should the need arise.
A source involved in certain aspects of the unit’s training told Kaieteur News, “Nobody ain’t ready for that. You just can’t pick up that and try to train them for such tasks in a short time. It’s not just left-right, left- right; you have to know formations when dealing with riots.”
According to the source, there appears to be not much enthusiasm by those identified for the unit since many of them have had to return to their normal duties after rigorous training sessions.
“Not much effort is being put into it and I think that the (force’s) administration recognized this and called a halt to the training,” the source explained.

Yes to an all female unit……….. wonder why it was decided to halt the training……… sounds suspicious….under my rule , I’ll ensure that there is an all Female Unit…………Women power……………
Another bad decision by the commissioner.
The Commissioner thinking is that we have the water cannon now, so no need to train personnel, you see training was started in October in preparation for the non arrival of the water cannon.
A professional police force would have continued training for its ranks in every discipline of the force’s work on a year round basis but this appears not to be the vision of this police force.
