M&CC’s 42-day amnesty for taxpayers ends
The Mayor and City Council’s 42-day amnesty period offered to taxpayers to help them settle their outstanding rates and taxes ended yesterday. The period earned the Council $178M, while $182M was waived in interest, says Treasurer Andrew Meredith.
According to Meredith, the amnesty commenced on September 15 and provided taxpayers with four weeks of 100 percent waiver in interest and two weeks of 50 percent waiver in interest.
He stated that owing to taxpayers’ responses to the amnesty period, the Council had to modify the original amnesty plan. Initially, there were three payment plans and entailed 100 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent waivers in interests in the first, second and third sets of two-week periods respectively.
