In observation of ‘World Sight Day’, the Lions Club of Georgetown Durban Park yesterday screened approximately 200 students in ‘their area of service’ for spectacles.
The exercise commenced at 09:00hrs at the North Ruimveldt Multilateral School.
The Lions Club is an international voluntary group and was established in Guyana in August 1960 with the aim being to voluntarily serve the public.
The Lions Clubs International Foundation promotes healthy vision and raises awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss, and the knowledge of eye health, through community based education.
Yesterday, under the theme “The Right to see” the club organised for approximately 200 students from five primary schools – Tucville, St. Pius, St.Thomas More, St. Sidwells and East La Penitence – to test their “sight”. It was further added that students from grades 5 and 6 were selected.
When asked as to why the organization selected that range of students it was noted by the president of the Lions Club, Joycelyn Dias “that is the time when children complaint about their sight”. She added that the club on Wednesday donated nine white canes to aid the blind.
Chairman of the club, Patricia Gray, stated that of the selected students there will be a short list of who will need spectacles or various eye drops.
The focus currently is on students who attend schools in Georgetown.
