Hard-working Guyanese need ‘appreciation’ too
Dear Editor,
I don’t know since when citizens of a country are supposed to show national appreciation to its leader. It seems nowadays our leaders are doing us the citizens a favour and we should be grateful.
It was clear that the use of the country’s resources helped to fill the program for the affair. I though am not saying our leader is misusing the country’s resources but I would like justification in finances placed personally by the government to support the event.
Until then I must be of the view that our army, police force and other national equipment were used to facilitate the event. This should not be. The monies placed on operating the event could have gone to many other places, to assist local communities or what have you.
I am also saying national appreciation because the event was televised all across Guyana. It was not a personal affair whereby persons wishing to show appreciation could have attended.
You could have visited the affair from your couch. It bombarded television screens with the majority of stations broadcasting. It is not a matter of them buying up the airtime for the event but I see it as a great publicity stunt.
It all of a sudden seems like our government leaders are pop stars. I thought it was a job that our president was performing, getting paid like any ordinary working person. What about those who do the filthiest and most crucial of jobs that ensure our country runs smoothly, for example our garbage collectors? Don’t they deserve some gratitude, and don’t our nurses deserve national appreciation like so many others who operate this country? Doesn’t the government get paid like everyone else?
In conclusion Guyana, we can show our appreciation to our government but ensure that our leaders deserve it. Don’t get sweet on the event when we’re celebrating at our own expense, and I say this until proven false.
We as Guyanese go to work every day and get paid for it like everyone else, when will we get national recognition?
