Dear Editor,
The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) has noted with some concern, statements made by some in authority that elements are seeking to destroy the game of cricket to fulfill personal ambitions and for positions of power while neglecting the development of the game.
The BCB would like to assure the cricketing public, its numerous sponsors and all stakeholders of the game in the ancient county that such statements cannot be associated with Berbice.
We have proven over the last four years that our only goal is the development of cricket and lifting the game to its highest standard ever via the proven formula of hard work, dedication, team unity, honesty and accountability.
Our record of achievements on and off the cricket field is not the result of luck but due to careful planning and visionary leadership. The leadership of the Berbice Cricket Board both collectively and individually has no interest in power-grabbing at the senior level and is totally dedicated towards the revival of the game at the national level.
Cricket in Guyana can be on the rise again like in Berbice, if every cricket official, county Board and the Guyana Cricket Board follow our proven formula. All the BCB wants for Guyana’s Cricket is the best and we will continue to lead by example and not be distracted by anyone.
For those who need to be reminded, the records show that cricket in Berbice is being played at the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Under-32, Female, Second Division and First Division levels. In addition the Berbice Cricket Board has established a Berbice “A” Team and will also be starting 20/20 Tournaments for both male and female.
Our players have made us proud by selection to the West Indies Senior Team, Female West Indies Team, West Indies “A” and the National Teams at all levels. Off the Cricket field the success has been even better with over 200 completed projects and programmes in four years.
The BCB has successfully transformed itself into a NGO which touches and changes the lives of thousands while making sure that every young cricketer of both sexes that represent the county are not only productive on the field, but also as role models and sporting ambassadors.
We have set ourselves a target of 75 programmes this year and have already completed 62 of them. Instead of targeting us, why don’t others try to follow in our humble footsteps and let us achieve successes together?
Programmes like our Awards Ceremony, Annual Magazine, Annual Educational Scheme, Tribute to heroes, Inter-county Most Valuable Player, Inter-county Cap System, Cricket Academy, Senior Elite Training Programme, Junior Elite Training Programme, tribute to Retired Cricketers, Tribute to Grounds men, Berbice Cricket Board Father and Mother of the year, Grade 6 Assessment Awards Scheme, Hall of Fame, All Time Cricket XI at all levels, Senior Players charity Fund, Donation to Clubs, Medical Assistance to sick children, numerous coaching clinics and seminars among numerous others are not for positive public relations only.
Each of the above named programmes have had positive impact on Berbice Cricket and with many more to be implemented, the success story would continue to be even bigger.
The BCB and its members are not interested in power grabbing, personal ambition or playing little boys’ games. Our records of achievements on and off the cricket field speak for itself and the entire Board recommits itself to doing everything possible to assist the game and the cricketers.
Many outstanding sports leaders who have changed the face of history never played the game but were successful at management because of commitment and vision. There can be no doubt in ones mind that the BCB has been successful and this has been achieved without the help of Test players.
Together we shall progress and make Berbice, Guyana and the West Indies proud. If you think you have seen the best of the BCB, you have not seen anything yet because this week another set of exciting projects and programmes would be unveiled.
