Dear Editor,
The haste with which the Government is proceeding with the telecommunications bill is to say the least, indecent! The opposition, taking a principled position, has decided not to be a part of this farce!
It leaves one to wonder if there are persons who will benefit from this ‘happening’. Will there be deals struck? Is it that some people want to make sure that the deal goes through before they lose power? Is it that there is some sort of ‘personal vendetta’ that has to be ‘sorted out’ before an event?
There are many questions that need to be answered. For example, if the government received over 50 billion dollars into their coffers over the last few years, then it is a profitable company.
Maybe GT&T’s CEO (now that he is speaking out) can tell us how much of that was actually dividends from the 20% shares that the government owns so we can be prepared to (with our eyes wide open and armed with information) see the hoodwinking that will pass as a sale of the 20% shares owned by the government.
Mr. Mahadeo, could you tell us or could anyone say, if the 20% shares are sold for 50 million US Dollars to be paid over five years, what would have been the earnings from the 20% over the same five years?
I have the very strong feeling that the earnings will be about the same and we would still have our shares! It does not take a rocket scientist to see that the shares have to be sold NOW! To facilitate someone or something special!
Maybe more condos in the US or more yatchs for those who do not have as yet! Or maybe to purchase some more islands! Could someone please tell us the earnings and list the properties of the Chairman of NICIL and the other persons who make decisions in NICIL for example? Do they declare their assets and earnings to the Integrity Commission? If so, where can the public get the information?
So many Questions! Mr. Donald Ramotar, I really feel you do not know what you are getting into! You are an Honest Man. You will need to clean shop! I hope you do. The hope of our nation lies with you!
Mr. President,
This is an open letter to you. Could you answer the following questions please!
1. What has been the earnings from the 20% shares Guyana owns from GT&T over the last 19 years (annually)
2. What has been the amount of monies that GT&T has placed in the Government of Guyana’s coffers (except for the 20% dividends) on a year by year basis over the last 5 years or so?
3. Compare that to DIGICEL. How much did DIGICEL place in the National coffers over their years in Guyana?
4. Compare that to the other companies that provide Broad band access to Guyanese
5. Compare the monies that GT&T has invested back in Guyana to the other companies! A simple table would do.
6. What price are you expecting to get for the shares you own in GT&T when you sell (as you seem to want to do before your term closes)?
7. Over what period of time will Guyana get that money?
8. What would have been our earnings from the 20% over that period of time?
9. Why are you not selling out your ‘shares’ in GUYSUCO? It is not profitable. You are losing monies> Why are you not selling out the GPL? It is losing monies annually.
10. Why don’t you sell out your shares in GUYOIL?
If the President cannot or will not answer these questions, then could an economist do so? Maybe, Dr Ashni Singh. Maybe, Mr. Ram. But then there are many who are analysts. Anyone care to answer these questions? It will be very informative to the People of Guyana. After all we are part owners of GT&T!
