Dear Editor,
If there are any international organizations (e.g. UNICEF) collecting money to help the famine victims in Somalia and Kenya, I would be grateful if they would let readers know how we can contact them.
Our African Guyanese leaders, brothers and sisters, did not and do not have the time to organize any fundraising activities as they have been very busing preparing for and celebrating “Emancipation’ day, as well as advocating for power sharing for Africans in Guyana in the press and on TV.
One TV station has carried several programmes on power sharing with our beautifully African clad brothers. Also, on Sunday an African clad brother with a proper English name appeared on a local TV show but all these brothers forgot to mention that our African sisters with their babies have been trying to leave Somali and have been trying to get to Kenya where several Western organizations have been proving food, water and medicines for them.
In addition, on a “girl” TV show on Monday the hostess, who was fashionably attired in a splendid African dress, was able to get an African Guyanese presidential candidate to enlighten us about the “village movement” here in Guyana. I learnt a lot about the topic; but there was no mention about the famine on the “Continent”. It is true that the topic was so interesting that the show ran out of time.
A “thank you’ letter to the Editor in the August 3 Kaieteur News edition mentioned many things about Africa, but it also forgot to mention the famine; but then it was really a very, very long letter.
Now that most of the Emancipation day celebrations are over, I am confident that my African Guyanese brothers and sisters will find the time to comment on this letter. Alicia Ali
