Digicel NY Caribbean Cup
By Rawle Toney in New York
Hundreds of Guyanese filled the Thomas Jefferson High School Playfield in Brooklyn New
York to witness team Guyana outclass Antigua and Barbuda five goals to nil last Sunday, when action in the Digicel Caribbean Cup continued.
Playing in the opening game of the day’s double header, team Guyana; one of the tournaments’s favourite to win the title this year, were missing Dwight Peters, Dwain Jacobs and Goalkeeper Ronson Williams, who all went back to Guyana to play for their club Alpha United in the CONCACAF Champions League.
Nonetheless, the day belonged to Kevin Beaton who netted a double which also put him as the tournament’s leading goal scorer so far (six) and Devon Millington who did everything right except scoring many goals.
With a vociferous crowd behind them, Guyana came out looking sharp as they passed the ball fluently around the opposition.
Millington always seemed threatening from the start and resorted to the role of play maker, showing off such qualities when he set up Clive Nobrega for Guyana’s opening goal.
The second was also set up by Millington after he made his way down the left wing and sent a pass to a lurking Jermaine Scott in front of the goal who made no mistakes in slotting it home to give Guyana a 2-0 lead.
However, Scott along with Antigua’s Andrew Smith were both red carded for aggressive play at centre field as Guyana ended the first half leading 2- 0.
The game took an up-tempo swing in the second half with Antigua looking to make several sorties on goal, but all their tries were quickly thwarted and they were kept at bay, thanks to Guyana’s rock solid defence led by Howard Lowe and Abassi McPherson.
Lowe and McPherson formed a ‘two-man’ brick wall at the back while up front Beaton and Millington continue to torment the Antiguan defenders.
Beaton collected a pass from Midfield, sent by Konata Manning and broke down the middle and went one-on-one with the goalie who he beat with a low flat shot to his left, as Guyana extended their lead. The Bakewell Topp XX and junior National striker then scored his second this time thanks to
Millington who did all the work leaving Beaton to tap into an open goal. Millington’s hard work would pay off when he would finally find the back of the net, scoring Guyana’s final goal of the game.
It was the first time in the tournaments 20 year history that Guyana came out on top of the group and many spectators, especially those who have
been following the tournament over the year’s believe that this year, Guyana have the best team in the tournament.
Most of them are even predicting a Jamaica/Guyana final. The Reggae boys who like the Guyanese are still unbeaten in the tournament, ended their preliminary round matches on a winning note; defeating St Vincent and the Grenadines 1 -0.
After the game, Guyana’s coach Samuel Bumbry expressed his joy at the convincing win but said that his side will now have to focus a bit more on their defensive tactics and execution.
Guyana have played five games so far in the tournament; drawing Nil with Colombia and Grenada, defeated St Lucia 3 -0 and then demolishing St Kitts and Nevis 6 -0.
Beaton stands as the leading goal scorer in the tournament with six goals, while Millington stands second with four; tied with Grenada’s Joel Ford.
