Confronting one of her worst fears in life, Melva Boston, was one of many passengers on the ill-fated Caribbean Airlines plane which crashed on landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, early yesterday morning.
Boston was visiting the country on vacation. She recalled that the Caribbean Airlines Flight BW523, with 163 on board broke in half on landing.
The still traumatised Melva Boston said that she and her daughter were travelling from Trinidad. Minutes before touching down at CJIA, there was the usual announcement to buckle up their seat belts. “The plane was going down and I didn’t see any lights, but someone tell me when we reach we will see the light for the airstrip.
“Then when the plane was going down, it come back up into the sky then the plane crashed into the airstrip and forced us forward, then everything get dark and I thought we were all dead.”
With tears in her eye, Ms Boston noted that the lights in the plane then came on and she and her daughter climbed through the emergency exit door and were caught by a fireman who had raced to the scene. Thanking God that she did not receive any serious injuries, Ms Boston said that she is studying to return home since the event has so traumatised her that she feels she would not enjoy a vacation in the country.
A relative who had travelled to the airport to collect Ms Boston said that President Jagdeo visited the airport after the crash and was concerned about the lack of medical personnel at the airport.
The irate woman said that it appeared as if many of the medical personnel were not on duty since they were not on hand for those who wanted urgent medical attention.
