The long-established rivalry between Linden and Georgetown teams in the traditional version of football has now been transferred to the latest edition, FastBall.
This mouth watering competition between the two Towns will ignite the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground this evening as the round-of-32 in the GT&T FastBall knock-out football tournament gets cracking.
Three of the four scheduled matches tonight will be City/Linden affairs with the opening encounter featuring Grove, the runner up team in the East Bank Zone taking on Linden’s Train Line.
The Pioneer / GFC Masters feature match-up is expected to be a keen contest with the Masters having earned a lifeline due to the expulsion of Bent Street for playing an unregistered player, grabbing the opportunity with glee to advance this far.
They {Masters} will be aiming to take care of business but will find the task of so doing an uphill one with their opponents having some solid players in their lineup including veteran John Wayne Milo, Marlon Daniels, Lindey Johnson, Renie Gibbons, Teon Spencer, Warren Brown, Wayne Phillips and Randy Small.
GFC Masters challenge will be carried by Dane Kendall, Shawn Browne, Orin Kitt, Milton Fraser, Peter Lashley, Michael George, Shawn Forde, Gilbert Mendonca, Shawn Daniels and Clifford Ruffino among others.
Grove, in seeking to move into the round-of-16 will reflect on their win in the Kashif & Shanghai against another Linden team, Milerock, but this version of the game is certainly a different ball game and there is no room for lapses and many of the strong teams who walked the plank would recall.
Opportunities when worked for must be converted given the fact that with the advent of the blue ball in the final 3 minutes of each half, any slim advantage can be erased since a blue ball goal amounts to two (2).
Grove’s charge for victory will be led by Orson Francois, Shermon Doris, Michael Matthews, Kevin Alleyne, Travis Jones, Domain Garnett, Collis Tinnie, Teshawn Blackman, Rondell Alleyne, Dexter Archer and John Matthews.
Train Line, the 3rd best team in Linden will be banking on what is anticipated to be another great crowd at the MSC tonight to help them put away the opposition. The on-field task of securing their place in the next round will centre around, Sherwin Waldron, Michael Isaacs, Uroxy Major, Elford Griffith, Floyd Major, Cleveland Daniels, Delon Charter, Marley Major, Renson Major and Orville McKoy among others.
Fans are in for a pulsating evening of play which will continue in the Customs versus Amelia’s Ward A showdown. Leading Customs will be Carlos Monkhouse, Jomo Benfield, Lionel Grimes, Sherwin Bailey, Justin Bentick, Rawle Johnny and Dexter Brandt.
At the helm for Amelia’s Ward are; Travis Waterton, Shawn Daniels, Kevern Prowell Jermaine Batson, Odel Allicock, Monty Simon, Gavin Daw and Kenny Tom.
Linden zone champions Bakewell Topp XX A, harbouring thoughts of going all the way and certainly one of the favorites to, will have added City side Warmongers to their list of casualties.
The Bakewell boys featuring veteran forward Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules, who is still a threat to any defence in Guyana, remains an important conduit for Topp XX in their quest to lift the top prize of One Million Dollars when the final is contested on August 7 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence is staged.
Hercules’ task and plan will be backed up by some quality players in Kayode McKinnon, Quacy Johnson, Michael Crandon, Keon Sears, Trenton Lashley, Jamie Wilson and Lloyd Gilbert.
Warmongers, while not featuring any players as popular as those on the Topp XX roster, will be a force to reckon with. Their will hope to play as a combined unit to smother their opponents; Gavin Bobb, Anthony Sancho, Deron Bowen, Mark Trotman, Jevim Clower, Prince Whanton, Wayne Whanton, Terrence Whanton, Joel Davis, Kevin McKenzie and Rajkumar Ganesh all to play an important role to the cause of moving on.
This evening’s FastBall action will be preceded by a warm up game between Guyana Masters and Linden Masters, the former are preparing for a Regional competition. Kick off time today is 16:00hrs.
