The Adita Kids Trust Foundation yesterday presented a bat to national under-19 left-hander Chanderpaul Hemraj at a simple ceremony at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC).
The foundation runs three educational institutes including its main branch at Bath Settlement in West Berbice with a Primary school at Mortice Mahaicony and a computer centre at Bagotville in West Demerara.
Samuel Dindyal, one of the Directors of the Foundation which has over 275 students between the ages of seven to adults said yesterday’s presentation was a series of such activities to help develop young children who have talent so that they are encouraged to ‘move on’ in whichever field they venture into.
He added that it was hoped that Hemraj, who scored a classy 88 on debut in Guyana’s first round win against the Leeward Islands, would be inspired by the presentation and strive for more success for his country.
Cricket commentator Inderjeet Persaud, who teaches at the Mortice branch, told the 18-year-old Hemraj, who attends IBE in Lusignan, that he will get US$500 for his first century for Guyana and a complete kit of cricket gear if he make the West Indies youth team.
“I want the runs to flow from your new bat not only for Guyana but for the West Indies and I hope the expectations we have of you does not create pressure on you but act as motivation for more success,” Persaud told the youngster who plays for Everest in Demerara’s cricket.
Dindyal informed that only recently the top student from the Mortice school (Gaitri Persaud) was presented with a fully loaded lap top computer after passing the National Grade Six Assessment and gaining entry to the St Roses High School in Georgetown.
Both Dindyal and Persaud wished Hemraj, a former National under-15 batsman, well in the rest of the series and told the youth to make Guyana proud.
