Champtress is champion at Port Mourant

Champtress owned by Mr. Dennis DeRoop of the Simple Royal stable of Corentyne ran brilliantly to capture the feature C class event and scored its first win on Guyana’s soil when the Port Mourant Turf Club in collaboration with the PPP/C held a successful one day horse race meet at the Port Mourant Turf Club.
The American Bred and Born animal, which was piloted by Yap ‘Old Boy’ Drepaul was too good for its opponents as it raced away with the $600,000 first prize compliments of Banks DIH and the President’s Cup in a major upset for the day.
The animals were off to an excellent start in the 1500m event with Marathon Man of the Jumbo Jet stable with Navin on the perch, setting a blistering pace as it did much of the early running. By the half way mark the fit and well groomed Champtress and Stable mate Wad a Luck had started to make their move. By the time the animals reached the far turn it was Champtress that was pressing Marathon Man for the lead. It eventually took over and with skillful riding by Drepaul eased away from the rest of the field down the home stretch to win comfortably.
Zelik eased into to second. Marathon Man third and Wad A Luck Fourth.
Better than Gold of the Jagdeo stable continued its impressive unbeaten run with another convincing victory in the Three Year old Open 1500m event for Guyana and West Indies Bred Horses. With Rupert ‘Put’ Ramnauth on the mount, Better than Gold took over from the half way mark from Irish Girl and never looked back as it steamed to victory and captured the Donald Ramoutar trophy and the $400,000 winner’s money. Irish Girl held on for second as Face the Fire and work Force wilted under the heat.
It was another win for the Jagdeo stable in the D class 1000m event as jockey Ramnauth guided Gullium to victory. It was one of the most competitive events of the day with a top class field assembled. Appealing Harvest, Wad A Luck and Home Bush Baby rounded out the money. The win was worth $400,000 and the Minister Ashnie Singh trophy.
Times Have Change of the Asrafali stable, showed that its time for new winners when it carted off the Two year old1000m event for the new runners. Ridden by Jamaican Jockey Andron Findley, the animal eased away from the rest of the field on the home stretch to take the $400,000 top money and the Lewis Trophy from Serenity. Stablemate Come Dance With Me came in third ahead of Speed Girl.
Got to Go with Jockey Prem Chandra on its back of the Jumbo Jet Stable, continues to go all the way with another win in the race for horses classified F and lower over 1500m. The win was worth $300,000 and the GPC trophy. King Maker, Top of The Line and Sir Balajie were all humbled.
It was a good day for Bob’s Fortune as it romped away with the G class event to take the $240,000 winners money and Trophy compliments of Kris Jagdeo Construction and Cynthia Jagdeo. Stormy Deal, Momzele and Stormy Lass indeed had a rough time as they finished down the order.
Prince Renukha of the Arjune stable with Yap Drepaul on board shone brightly as it carted off the $160,000 winners money and the Dr. Leslie Ramsammy trophy in the H class 1500m event. Dream Girl, Five Star General and Prospectors Pride had all their dreams and prospects shattered.
Extra Heat with Richmond on board of the Devanand stable was too hot to handle as it burned up its opponents in the I2 1000m event. Princess Renuka, Pinky and The Gump were the others that could not stand the heat.
There were two events for I3 horses; the Group A race was won by Cash Connection, while the Group B category was taken by The Lion. The distances were 1000m, while the first prize was $120,000. The trophies were donated by the Regional Chairman and the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club.
The champion jockey on show was Rupert Ramnauth, the Jagdeo stable with Tribuwan ‘Turbo ‘Jagdeo was adjudged the champion stable and trainer. The top performers were presented with the accolades by the organizers and the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market. All the successful jockeys were presented with medals.
Over 85 horses participated in the day’s action.
