Action packed encounters as futsal football competition heats up
It’s now crunch time and the action in the National Sports Commission/Georgetown Football Association Futsal football competition has intensified with each participating team anxious to walk off with the spoils. The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) squad has sent a strong message to its archrivals when they disposed of Flamingo FC as the action resumed at the National Gymnasium Tuesday evening last.
Led by a hat-trick off the boots of Paul Bobb in the 5th minute of the first half and the 2nd and 12th minutes of the second, and a Kevin Lewis’ success on stroke of the half time whistle, the Army triumphed 4-1 and progressed into the knockout stage which gets underway at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) next Tuesday, July 12. Earlier in the night, Fruta Conquerors FC needled the Georgetown Football Club and accrued 9 points to lead their group. Also on Tuesday night, the University of Guyana and Black Pearl FC played to a 1-1 stalemate.
The competition has now reached an interesting stage and all of the teams have upped their games a notch. Those teams through to the knockout stage are YMCA, Houston Stars, Guyana Police Force, Beacons Fruta Conquerors, GFC, GDF and Flamingo FC.
Indeed, the action between the GDF and Flamingo had all the trimmings of a match in the finals. The game started at a heated pace when Quamie Fanfare sped to the Army’s goal and slammed in the first success. One minute later, Paul Bobb exacted revenge when he stitched in the equalizer. The soldiers were not yet done as Keiron Lewis struck simultaneously with the half time whistle to send his team in on the break 2-1.
The two teams then engaged in fierce exchanges with no quarters asked and none given. It was Bobb who adroitly evaded the opposition’s defence to widen the advantage for his team. He struck again in the 12th minute of the second half and even though down by three clear goals, the Flamingo team continued to put up a fierce fight and on any other night might have prevailed but for the persistence and accuracy of Bobb.
The winner of the competition carts off $500,000 while the runners up net half that amount. The third place finishers win $150,000 while the final podium position will go home with $100,000. There are also several other incentives including highest goal scorer, best goalkeeper and most valuable player among others.
Several corporate entities have teamed up to ensure that the tournament is successfully staged. They are Banks DIH Ltd, Guyana Revenue Authority, Body Central, Med and Ron Express Shipping and Brokers and the National Sports Commission.
