A 35-year-old pedestrian was killed on the spot at around 04:30 hrs yesterday in Sheriff Street after being struck down by a driver who police said was under the influence of alcohol.
Dead is 35-year-old Sewcharran Persaud Ugraj of Lot 162 Mon Repos Pasture, East Coast Demerara who was standing at a corner on Sheriff Street when the incident occurred.
A police release said that a breathalyser revealed that the driver’s alcohol content was found over the legal limit. He has been detained.
According to reports, Ugraj was at the eastern side of the road when a speeding red car struck him.
Reports are that the driver of PMM 1094, said to be a former media photographer, was speeding along the road when he suddenly swerved into the opposite lane and ended up hitting Ugraj.
Eyewitnesses said that Ugraj was “pelted into the air” and landed several feet from where he was struck.
This publication also was made to understand that the driver was eventually taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) in a ‘delirious state’. His vehicle was fished out of the nearby trench and taken to the Kitty Police Station.
When this newspaper arrived at the police station, relatives of both parties were there awaiting instructions and information from traffic ranks.
Williams’ relatives contacted a prominent attorney to look into his interests while Ugraj’s parents sought the services of another lawyer.
The dead man’s mother described Ugraj as a quiet individual who did not have many close friends.
She explained that yesterday morning her husband received a telephone call from the police notifying them that Ugraj was involved in an accident. She had just finished her early morning prayers for the well-being of her family.
“Meh son don’t trouble nobody. Meh don’t get no trouble with he. He is the eldest one. Is only three months now meh father dead and gone and now me son!” she lamented.
According to Ugraj’s father, who identified himself as Motilall, his son was the driver of a truck that would transport lumber from the interior and on the day before his demise, Ugraj left with a friend to locate parts for the vehicle.
It wasn’t until yesterday morning that a police rank contacted the father via telephone to alert him that his son was involved in an accident.
“When them tell me how he went in accident, I ask them if it serious and the police say no. They say I must come down to the station. They never tell me how he dead already, but I understand what they did, I have no objections to that.”
Ugraj leaves to mourn his wife and two children, a four year old son and three year old daughter.
When Kaieteur News visited the GPHC yesterday afternoon, a hospital source explained that the driver’s brother had accompanied him to the facility.
He was subsequently discharged from the GPHC.
