What an unfair, unjust world we live in
DEAR EDITOR,
The state owes a 34-year old chap, the father of 3 children, 3 months’ pay amounting to G$180,000 – he has been teaching for 17 years. In spite of this, he carries on teaching technical drawing to 2 CXC classes, 2 third-form classes and 3 second form classes – a heavy workload.
In the meantime, he has to feed, clothe and house himself and family on what? He steals some tools from his place of employment, readily admits his crime, is remorseful and pleads guilty in a court of law and asks in a heart-breaking plea “….. have mercy on me”, explaining the circumstances. His plea falls on deaf ears and he is given a 12-month jail sentence.
Who will take care of his family while he is locked up? Will the state? Will they pay the man the money he is owed?
To me, that chap must be a dedicated, sincere teacher, to have remained doing that skilled job WITHOUT PAY and, to me, he shows more compassion than his employers.
No wonder the neighbouring territories have so little respect for Guyanese.
One hopes the powers-that-be would consider the mitigating circumstances of this case and at least suspend the sentence, so that he may continue to serve the community in some way. I wish those who contributed to his plight have a sound night’s sleep.
