Dear Editor,
I wish to draw attention to the recent increase of barefaced crimes that is on the rise in our streets once again.
This gangrenous ulcer is nurtured by the recent attitudes of the police. I say this because there is a monster being created within the Guyana Police Force by the upper echelons.
Let’s start with the various patrols that we see all over the city; there are motor vehicle patrols, there are motor cycle patrols, there is Aberdeen (armed foot patrols), yet this ulcer (crime) manifests itself why? I’ll tell you.
Our men and women in uniforms are constantly bombarded by the ‘little dictators’ in the force.
For instance, if a patrol stops a vehicle and conduct a search, before the vehicle commander can update his base with what he or she is about to do, the stopped vehicle’s driver is already on his cell phone complaining to one of the ‘little dictators’ inside police headquarters who in turn orders the vehicle back to base and abuses the entire patrol with a series of profane language, they are not given a chance to explain why they stopped the vehicle, neither are they allowed to do patrol duties any more, they are posted on the Tactical Services Unit guard as a form of punishment to satisfy the ‘little dictators’ friends, who in turn furnishes them with continuous monetary gifts.
Other patrols hearing this are now not so enthused to stop cars, conduct searches on vehicles or persons, and even to fight crime the way they were once trained to do it. What happens next? Oh there is a big crime spree. How? The criminals have a network too, and zoom in to what’s taking place with patrols then and now and quickly figure out what chances they can take when, where and how. As a result, therein lies the nurturing of that gangrenous ulcer.
Mr. Editor, jump high or low, look at what types of crime are being carried out, mostly armed robbery to the tune of millions, in bright daylight.
Our private sector businesses are at the mercy of these gun-totting bandits, who somehow knows the hour of the movement of large sums of money from the various businesses, they are able to monitor the police movements easily, because the patrols in their specify areas are instructed to patrol and not stop in that area until their 12 hours are done, also remember they are now not mindful of being suspicious of anyone for fear of the ‘little dictators’ rod of cruelty; the area most times covers a wide radius, and includes two to three supermarkets, auto shops and other micro businesses.
It is therefore a walk in the park for the ‘would be criminals’ with a well sorted out plan for which ever business they want to take down. It brings to mind the lion king storey, in which the lion awakes and decides what type of meat he will eat today, similarly, the criminals decide what business they will take today.
On the other hand, the story can take a different view as well, where the lion must back off because the human predators are hunting wild meat, applying this to the society, the police who were once the predators of criminals are now on the down low because of the ‘little dictators’ conscious or unconscious support for crime, hence, monsters are created.
Mr. Editor, please note also, that these very ranks are called upon to subscribe to the ‘little dictators’, birthday annually, and if they refuse, they are dealt with severely by those aspiring to become a ‘little dictator’.
How then, can our state progress when we have a bunch of men and women who are threatened even when they give their best for this nation?
These are the people who are always around when we leave for work; use the roadways, on recreation, in a supermarket, and when we sleep. Let’s give them some attention; let’s zoom in on what’s going on in that Police Headquarters.
Our men and women in uniforms are being deliberately degraded because a ‘little dictator’ is now senile. So now that we know the problem, let’s share in the solution.
