The youthful and energetic Guysuco Training Centre #1 team brushed aside all opponents to cart off the Trophy Stall first place trophy when the BVA held its round robin one day open competition at the GTM hard court in New Amsterdam.

Playing in very humid and blistering conditions where the stamina and fitness of the players was tested the GTC#1 team defeated Falcons of Canje, Albion #1, Albion#2, Port Mourant Jaguars, Rollers of New Amsterdam, and GTC#3 but lost to eventual second place finisher GTC#2 in a closely fought game (21-25). Third place went to Rollers of N/A who edged out Falcons.
All eight teams in the competition played the maximum of seven games and the selection committee of the BVA had a good look at the players with the aim of short-listing a squad of thirty (30) players to undergo training to represent Berbice. The list of players will be made public shortly.
At the presentation ceremony held in fading light immediately after the conclusion of the competition, President of the BVA, Gregory Rambarran thanked Mr. Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall in Georgetown for donating the first, second, third and MVP trophies, the manager of GTM for the use of the hard court, those who volunteered to serve as officials, Rollers for enhancing the playing area and all of the teams for participating in the competition.
However, he berated some players who at times displayed behaviour which is not allowed under the FIVB’s code of conduct and with regards to the standard of play he said that the BVA will not reward “mediocrity” and urged players to lift their game mentally and develop a passion for the sport.
Vice President and National Coach, Levi Nedd, who is also the Chairman of the Selection Committee reiterated the points made by the President and informed those present that Volleyball is a spectacular game, but that aspect was missing in the plays executed by some teams. He informed that the list will be released later this week and he was willing to work with players to develop their game.
Chairman of the Referees Committee, Errol Chase urged the teams to make special efforts to have members of their teams trained as referees and scorers so that a higher standard of officiating can be achieved to move the sport forward.
The MVP of the tournament trophy was awarded to Troy Matheson of GTC#1 and the 1st. 2nd. and 3rd place trophies were presented to the captains of GTC#1, GTC#2 and Rollers by female spectators present.
Trophies were also presented to the setters of the three teams and the setter of Falcons.
