– LTI battle MHS in crucial prelim game
After two weeks of intense competition in the Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Championships in Linden, one of the biggest games of the competition, thus far, will surface when McKenzie High School (MHS) take on the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) today.
The two teams are to battle in the feature game of a double-header that produces a bottom-ranked duel between Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School and New Silver-City Secondary to get the afternoon’s proceedings off before the clash of two titans. Both teams enter the feature event with two wins apiece from as much games, which makes for a classic this afternoon among two teams, either of which, can go on to win the competition. MHS, LTI and Kwakwani Secondary are all favoured to win the 2011 title.
McKenzie High has been in big games before after winning several titles in the competition with Akeem “The Dream” Kanhai as their go-to-guy, but things have changed and there is no ‘Dream’ for the team to close their eyes and imagine the title in the locker room.
McKenzie will be up against a quality team from the Technical Institute. National schools’ jump champion, Parish Cadogan has taken over the lead role after the departure of Kanhai. Cadogan is a prolific scorer, who played for several years alongside ‘The Dream’.
He has Sheldon Noel to offer him support, but will that support be enough to overcome a serious threat from LTI? That question can only be answered after what is expected to be one of the best games of the competition since it bounced off last week Monday.
The Technical Institute will be working their “chemistry”, as coach, Royston Retemyer, told this newspaper last week, around national junior players, Geoffrey LaRose and Marlon Pollydore, in a merciless offensive tactic as was shown in their two earlier games.
All in all, today’s feature game makes for some interesting basketball that will give some insight into what is to come when the tournament reaches the Final Four stage. There is not a feather of doubt that luminaries will be out to see what could be a dry-run of the final. (Edison Jefford)
