Dear Editor,
I read the Article ‘Republic Park castle mysteriously demolished’ (KN, 27/03/2011) with wry amusement. It is a recognised fact that in many neighbourhoods our brothers and sisters who live in the diaspora have left their properties, either land or buildings, in a deplorable state.
In many instances neighbours out of disgust and a concern for cleanliness and safety, have had to undertake to cut, clear lots and remove debris at their own expense. The “castles” in Republic Park are a prime example of this state of affairs .
I live in Republic Park. These two buildings are an eyesore, disgrace, a haven for vagrants and quite possibly criminals. If the owners were that concerned about their properties they would have attended to them years ago.
I do not condone the illegal destruction of property. However, in the interest of the overall safety and well being of the community, the appropriate authorities must take action on these issues in order to eliminate as much as possible these kinds of incidents. In other jurisdictions neighbourhood associations are empowered by statute to demand that homeowners maintain their properties at an acceptable level.
Hopefully this serves as a most instructive lesson for all parties concerned
