A man who has been occupying a government reserve at Vryman’s Erven/ Smythfield for a very long time is in custody after he severed the hand of a junky who was caught on his farm.
According to reports, around 09:30 hrs on Friday, Milton Payne, 70, who gave his address as Vryman’s Erven/ Smythfield was in his farm which is covered with thick bushes on the same plot of land when he was informed by his son that one Ray Anthony, 25, called ‘Rambo’ a known character of no fixed placed of abode, was on the farm. Payne immediately armed himself and went in search of ‘Rambo’. A first search of the bushes came up empty handed.
It is understood that Payne again went in search of the intruder and after a while located him hiding under some bushes and armed with a Rambo Knife. The man was confronted and a scuffle ensued during which Rambo was severely wounded on his left hand, which was almost severed by the wrist.
It is understood that the man was left in the bushes on the Farm for a long while. The police eventually got word of the incident and visited the farm. They abandoned the search after being unable to locate the injured man in the thick bushes.
The police returned with reinforcement and after a while emerged with the severely wounded man. He was immediately rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital, where doctors immediately referred him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Payne and his son were subsequently taken into custody. The son has since given a statement and has been released. Payne remains in custody as investigation continues and charges are likely shortly.
Residents nearby said they did not hear anything and suspected that the man was tied up so he could not make a sound before being injured. Payne was featured in the Kaieteur News a few weeks ago as the person who was spraying dangerous chemicals on the farm on the Government reserve which caused nearby resident to fall sick. Residents had complained about the smell and effect of the drugs used by the elderly man. One resident had complained that the chemical emits an obnoxious smell that burns his wife’s nose and caused his young daughter to sneeze.
Payne, a former Mirror newspaper vendor, had boasted that no one could do him anything and of his alleged ties with the ruling party.
Residents had stated that they had reported the matter of squatting and spraying of the chemical to both Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha and Community Relations Officer of the Office of the President, Faizal Jaffarally on numerous occasions.
The matter was also reported to the police and the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam.
Payne had told residents that the (town) Council was a PNC one and that he [Payne] is PPP. Payne had also allegedly told residents that the PPP runs everything and that the M&TC cannot do anything about the matter.
Residents for a long time have been calling on the Mayor and town Council and other relevant authorities to rid the area of the big bushes.
