“Rajesh and Sumintra Tire Mart” at Diamond, East Bank Demerara that was robbed of millions by two masked gunmen.
In the wee hours yesterday, armed bandits invaded a building located at 34 Public Road, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, and robbed a family of millions of dollars in cash and jewellery.
At around 03:00 am, Rajesh Seegobin and his wife Sumintra, their son and four other relatives were asleep in their home, which also facilitates their business, “Rajesh and Sumintra Tire Mart”, at the bottom flat, when two masked gunmen entered their premises, demanding cash, jewellery and other valuables.
Rajesh Seegobin told Kaieteur News that the intruders pushed open his bedroom door and one placed a gun to his face, telling him not to make any noise.
The man said that just as he was turning to defend himself, one bandit repeatedly hit him on the head with the handle of the gun until he fell to the ground.
Meanwhile, his wife began screaming but she quickly ceased doing so after one of the bandits told her to ‘shut up’ while threatening to shoot her husband.
The bandits then proceeded to round up members of the household, and bound their hands and feet, amidst more threats of shooting.
According to the family members, they were tied up with electrical cords and put to sit on the floor, as the two men began tumbling through the wardrobes, drawers and bedrooms of the house, in an effort to locate any concealed valuables. The gunmen also set afire some clothing which they had gathered together on the living room floor. This quickly subsided.
One bandit then took hold of Sumintra Seegobin and demanded that she hand over the money and all of the jewellery the family had in their possession.
This newspaper understands that even though the bandits were given money and other valuable items from the family, they still placed a gun to the woman’s head asking for “the diamonds”, which she explained that she did not possess. They then took hold of one of the children in the house (a little boy) and threatened to “throw him out of the window” if the woman did not comply with their demand.

One of the Seegobin’s wardrobes that was “ransacked” by the bandits as they continued to search the house for money, jewellery and other valuable items.
She pleaded with them, explaining that they had already taken all of the money she had in her home along with any jewellery the family owned. One of the bandits then asked her “this money is all yuh sell fuh de day?” and she replied with a frantic “yes, we don’t have more!”
The ordeal lasted for almost one hour and upon exiting the premises, the bandits warned the family that if they were to contact the police about the matter “there will be a bloodbath tomorrow”.
The robbers managed to escape with a little more than $6M in cash, four gold finger rings, two wedding bands, one gold chain, a pair of gold earrings and three cellular phones.
Kaieteur News was told by Rajesh Seegobin that the first bandit to run out of their house was the one with the money, which was placed in his son’s laptop bag, while the second man re-tied the hands of his wife, but in an effort to flee the scene, he did not manage to secure her hands properly.
As they were exiting, Sumintra quickly set her husband free and he rushed to see where the bandits had gone. They had jumped the fence and disappeared in the bushes aback of the house.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the house, the bathroom window for the bottom flat was broken – the apparent point of entry – and the shattered glass remained on the concrete outside of the house with a greasy footprint nearby.
The family explained that one of the bandits “most likely had to come through the window and open the side door for the other one to come in”.
According to Rajesh Seegobin, the business has been operating for five years and this was the first occasion that a robbery had occurred. It was also stated that the Seegobins have applied for a firearm licence since last year, but are still awaiting approval.
