Guyana opens its quest for glory in the IRB Sevens World Series against leaders England today, at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, USA.
The Guyanese who’re also grouped with Argentina, France is anticipated to have a tough task getting past a strong England unit, but Head Coach / Player Theodore Henry speaking on the IRB website earlier in the week revealed that Guyana is ready to seize the big chance playing on the world stage.
He reckoned that the experience gained playing at the Commonwealth Games and the World Series last year has given them the impetus to do even better this time.
Henry said the team is improving all the time and even though they’re without four key players in Kevin McKenzie, Richard Staglon, Albert LaRose and Dane Parks, those on the tour have all expressed a hunger to do well and create a few surprises.
“Some of these players will be making their first trip to the Series and they are all keen to become a permanent fixture on the team so I have no doubt that they will be striving to impress the TD,” Henry told this newspaper before departure.
Recently appointed Technical Director Spencer Robinson speaking with the media shortly before the team departed said that the confidence among the players is high and he expects the team to produce some good performances over the two days of competition.
He mentioned players such as former Captain Claudius Butts, Theodore Henry, Ryan Gonsalves and Ronald Mayers will have to step up and lead from the front, if Guyana is to make it to the final day, while those with a little less experience on the international circuit will have to impress and show that they too belong on the same platform.
The full squad reads: Theodore Henry (Captain), Ryan Gonsalves (Vice-Captain), Claudius Butts, Ronald Mayers, Avery Corbin, Peabo Hamilton, Christopher Singh, Walter George, Leon Greaves, Elwin Chase, Rupert Giles and Dominic Lespierre.
Guyana’s next engagement is against Argentina followed by the clash with France, who they drew 12-12 with last year.
Guyana is the current NAWIRA and CAC champions, having won the former for the past five years.
