Dear Editor,
Bartica is a thriving community, but environmentally unfriendly. This unsightly scene can be noticed on every street including the Chairman’s surroundings. I visited the most frequented place, which is next to the home of the Chairman and I was surprised when I was shown the residence of the Manager of this Region. Rubbish everywhere and people seem comfortable littering.
I am not too surprised because the Chairman is next door and sees this unsightly and unhealthy scene every time he opens his windows. I saw one rubbish truck gingerly moving down the road. Too often regional officials are allowed to behave as though they are not servants of their community and give priorities to their personal affairs
The Regional Chairman of Bartica is difficult to reach and citizens are unable to have their concerns aired. I must mention the name Garvey Harry, an exemplar for a Regional Chairman, vibrant and selfless also the youngest at the time. He commanded the respect of every citizen.
Public officials must understand and be reminded that they are the servant of the people and not the other way around. Political parties both Government and opposition must ensure that they do not select businessmen to manage the affairs of citizens of their respective communities. Man is known to be selfish creatures and always crave for things which attract corruption.
A Regional Chairman must apply his energies not to accumulate earthly treasures but to the concerns of the citizens they serve. The continuous postponing of Local Government elections has given some of these incompetent and selfish individuals scope to continue exhibiting their incompetence at the same time holding citizens to ransom. I hope political parties listen to the cries of the citizens.
