Our female politicians must let their political ambitions take centre stage
DEAR EDITOR,
A woman for president is an idea that in recent times has been floated, but we need to have this brilliant idea supported by strong thoughts and serious considerations as we step towards a new beginning in the political landscape for a change with someone with a refreshing personality, new visions and innovations that can give the people hope for real change that can be solid and valuable like gold and not thin paper with no real worth that can be torn to shreds.
For too long our women politicians have been walking in the shadows of their male counterparts, not allowing their voices to be heard distinctly nor making a deep impression with their presence and brilliant, innovative minds that can make a great difference in the advancement, development and image of a country sitting too deep in the shadows.
The male politicians over the decades have been tried and tested, Mrs. Janet Jagan’s rule came too late and was interrupted, and if the wind of change has to blow our way, the women have to leave the back seats and move forward in the limelight and let their political ambitions take centre stage as the world focuses on women of this era as they unleash the power of their beliefs and success in their chosen profession. There are women in this country, who can rise to the challenge and stand on a podium, true, dynamic, inspirational, to take the mantle of leadership to greater heights. The world has seen several great women leaders, past and present, in Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, Hillary Clinton, Christina Fernandez, women who are astute, brave, brilliant and aggressive, who commands attention and influences changes in their roles as leaders that leaves an indelible mark.
There are dynamic women in the political arena who have to command attention and step up to the platform whom the young women of today and tomorrow can emulate, to build their self-esteem, to recognise their worth, give strength to their aspirations and capture the enthusiasm as they strive to reach their goals. Women whose names are spoken in reverence, like Carolyn Rodrigues, since the last election and Priya Manickchand who have certainly made a deep impression on people’s mind are the new generation of women politicians who will most certainly take centre stage.
To win the people’s admiration and confidence, a politician has to touch the people’s hearts by being true in nature, sincere and dedicated and only then will there be appreciative applause. To put some emphasis on this point, is an example of some young students of a prestigious High school when asked to pick the names of Guyana’s influential women and write a paper on her work, her life, the entire class wanted to write on Priya Manickchand. The young, impressionable minds of tomorrow’s generation have already recognised the worth of this new, young politician as an influential and inspiring person who carries out her mandate with zest, determination and enthusiasm. She has brought a refreshing change to this arena and if she can stay untouched from all the dirty wrongs politics bring to the table and keep love, passion and selflessness in her heart as a politician, she will be the one everyone wants and it will certainly be a new beginning in the political race as women candidates pose serious challenges in an election year at any time.
