Dear Editor,
The argument between Messrs Tariek Lily and Cheddi (Joey) Jagan (Jr.), contributors to this page, ignores the real issue in the choice of a PNCR presidential candidate.
Permit me to observe that neither candidates suggested by the two contributors can move either the party or Guyana forward. While I agree that both Mr. David Granger and Mr. Carl Greenidge have valid credentials to be fielded and that the latter possesses the exposure to handle Guyanese problems, I can’t see why the search should stop with either of them.
Of all the five candidates, my preferred choice is Dr. Faith Harding for two reasons. First, she has the international exposure and local experience to grasp Guyana’s national problems and how to tackle them; second, she represents the most neglected Guyanese national asset: its women and their potential for transformational governance.
The leadership problem forewarned by Mr. Jagan (Jr) in case the PNCR candidate loses the national election is something the party could find a way of dealing with. In any case, it seems defeatist to me to assume the party was too weak to win an election when the battle was yet to be fully joined.
It is my belief that Dr. Harding fully understands the politics of the PNCR and has a fair understanding of the party at the grassroots. This, coupled with her experience in government and in the international arena, is compelling reason to adopt Dr. Harding as the PNCR candidate next month.
