Dear Editor,
It is appalling again to read that the Republic Bank branch which is located at Vreed-en-Hoop is the centre of yet another robbery in less than a month.
And, all that is emanating from the bank are lessons on safe money transactions practices, which are really ways to deflect attention from what the genesis of the problem is.
Whilst all of this is certainly valuable information, I wonder if the authorities at the bank have actually pondered the possibility of investigating employees? I wonder if they may have even considered that there might be employees who are complicit in these heinous crimes and might be receiving a drawback from the criminals who perpetrate these acts?
Something is decadently wrong. Something is unfathomable. After these two alleged incidents, bank officials cannot continue to bury their heads in sand to the reality that these acts might have resulted from information divulged from inside.
If this is indeed the case however, then professionalism, integrity, honesty, confidentiality are certainly lost in oblivion.
I was flummoxed when I read that the bank supervisor told the gentleman in the first incident that if he cannot wait, then he should go someplace else.
I have no empirical evidence, but, if he or she indeed uttered those words to a customer, then this individual should have been fired along time ago.
It is obvious that this individual has no modicum of respect, professionalism and human decency for the job and those who he or she serves. If indeed the supervisor, did utter those words, I wonder if he or she was ever reprimanded for the indiscretion and audacity?
I can imagine how traumatized individuals are who have to rely upon the services of that branch now. It will be very difficult to put trust in the people who are employed at that branch in light of these atrocities. Customers will certainly be looking with a suspicious eye; unfortunately the innocent will be accused as well.
It is hard enough that we have to contend with criminals on the road after a withdrawal is made; now people have to be skeptical about the individuals who are serving them.
I do not know the manner in which the bank operates, but if it is possible I think that employees should be rotated from bank to bank periodically much the same way that it is done for the police. And from one section of a bank to another within the same bank if this is not already done.
Ultimately, it is my considered opinion that more emphasis has to be placed on proper customer service not only within the banks, but also in various other sectors of this country.
