Dear Editor,
It pains many, if not all, when they pass young people with “young brains”, loitering at street corners daily, wasting their lives away. They gossip about how unambitious these young ones are and worry about the Guyana’s future. They blame it all on the youths. But are they really the ones to be blamed?
As unbelievable as it seems, many Guyanese receive schooling up to secondary level because it is free. After this, they are burdened with tuition fees to attend the lone “public university” in the country, University of Guyana.
Many cannot afford this, however thankful to student loans, persons dreaming of furthering their education are afforded the opportunity.
Despite Guyana being a Third World country, our university must not offer substandard education. We must aim to improve our level of education so that UG graduates must be viewed as equals worldwide.
It is obvious that the UG administration recognizes this and thus has upgraded its Associate Degree in Pharmacy to a Degree in Pharmacy has and implemented two new programmes, Degree in Optometry and Degree in Rehabilitation Science, to equate the programmes to other sister countries in Caricom.
Judging from the government’s reaction to the introduction of these new programmes with new fees structure, it is clear to one, that they think it is pointless.
The government claims that it reacted in this way because it was not informed of the new introduction. We, University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS), think that this is a preposterous excuse since the decision to introduce these programmes were approved by UG council – composed namely of Professor Compton Bourne – Chancellor/ Chairman; Dr. Prem Misir – Pro-Chancellor; Professor Lawrence Carrington – Vice Chancellor; Mr. Al Creighton – Nominee from Committee of Deans; Professor Calvin Eversley – Nominee from Academic Board; Mr. Collin Constantine – Nominee UGSS; Mr. Fredrick Kissoon – UGWU; Mr. Pulandar Kandhi – Representative Ministry of Education; Mr. Nirmal Rekha – Representative Ministry of Finance; Ms. Indranie Chandarpal – Nominee of the political party in office;Dr. Maude Bullen-McKenzie – Nominee Minority leader; Ms. Bibi Shadick – Representative Women’s interest; Mr. Edward Jarvis – Representative of Amerindians interest; Mr. Ramesh Dookhoo – representative of business interest; Ms. Coretta McDonald – Nominee Guyana Trade Union Congress; Mr. M. Rambarran – Minster’s Appointee field of Medicine; Mr. Gino Persaud – Minister’s appointee field of Law and two ex-officio members Mr. Vincent Alexander – Registrar of UG and Mr. John Seeram – Bursar UG.
So we ask, how can the government claim that they were not informed when they have numerous representatives on the council?
However, as these government official sit and quarrel about not being updated on new programmes in the university, many students’ futures are on the line as they worry whether they will be registered this semester.
On the other hand, fully registered students are also suffering since they have to work in classrooms and laboratories which are in a very deplorable state and some are “being prepared for the real world” by being lectured in a very X-rated manner.
Finally, last month Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) Caribbean Centre in collaboration with UG hosted the first Students’ Roundtable. Student leaders from around the Caribbean were given a tour of the campus and were appalled at the state of the campus given that it is the only university in the country.
It is unbelievable that foreigners visited the UG Turkeyen Campus for three days noticed the unacceptable state it is in and the government cannot see such. SHAME ON THE GOVERNMENT!!
