Dear Editor,
Athletics season is here again and thousands of children from the length and breadth of Guyana descended on the Providence Stadium to showcase their talents.
One can just imagine the anticipation and excitement felt by the future track, field and swimming stars.
This excitement however, was not enjoyed by all as was evident in one of the Georgetown camps. Many athletes from District 11 didn’t receive uniforms and the frivolous excuse was that there were not enough materials and that the majority of the uniforms that were made, were of one size.
This means many were left without their team’s uniform. To add insult to injury the few that were made were of the wrong colour, blue instead of mauve.
Something like this should never happen. It shows poor planning on the part of the persons responsible.
One wonders about the athletes who would have been participating for the first time at this level and wanted to be apart of the opening ceremony. How disappointing they must have felt. For some it’s an opportunity they would never have again.
To compound the bumpy start of things, the 800m girls’ under-11 race was not without controversy. In that event an athlete fell, who, coincidentally is from District 11. It took the intervention of the athlete’s parent and the persistent calls over the loud speaker for someone to pick up the athlete.
I hope that the remainder of the championship sees more professionalism and compassion which I know it’s capable of producing.
