Upper Demerara lead Track and Field Championships
AT LAST!!! Upper Demerara’s Winston Caesar finally wins the Boys’ 100m Under-20 race last night after back-to-back bronze medals in Linden in 2008 and Albion last year.
After the completion of 18 finals in the Track and Field Championships, Upper Demerara has assumed a narrow lead over Rupununi, who has surprisingly emerged as a threat on the basis of stellar performances from their distance athletes.
Upper Demerara has amassed 98.5 points while Rupununi are 15 points behind on 83.5 points in the Track and Field competition of the National Schools’ Championship. Corentyne is third with 78 points while North West has amassed 70 points. West Coast Berbice rounded off the top five teams after 18 finals with 59 points while North Georgetown has 53 points. East Coast Demerara is on 46.5 points. Essequibo Coast has 39 points with New Amsterdam on 38.5 points and West Demerara on 38 points.
East Bank Demerara is on 34 points while East Georgetown has 28 points. South Georgetown follows with 19 points as Essequibo Islands takes 17 points. Potaro rounds off the 16 Districts competing for supremacy with nine points so far. Even as the judges sort the results from the completed finals, the highlight of yesterday was the 100m finals last night that saw Winston Caesar winning the Boys’ U-20 100m after back-to-back third place finishes at Linden in 2008 and Albion last year.
National junior sprint queen, Tiffany Carto ‘brings home the bacon’ for District 13 last night in the U-18 Girls’ 100m sprint at the National Stadium.
Caesar ran 10.8 seconds to outclass Corentyne’s Cutis Flatts and North Georgetown’s Joshua Griffith, who was second and third in 11.3 seconds and 11.5 seconds respectively. Caesar is also expected to do well in the long and triple jumps.
Earlier in the night, national junior sprinter Chavez Ageday had raced to the Boys’ U-18 100m title in 10.8 seconds. Bartica’s Carl Tudor was second in 11.0 seconds while South Georgetown’s Stephan James was third in 11.3 seconds.
Ashley Tasher’s sublime form continues in the junior sprints with a 12.7 seconds win the Girls’ U-14 100m. North Georgetown’s, Tasher beat Upper Demerara’s Danielle Adrian (13.0) and South Georgetown’s Tirana Mitchell 13.4 seconds.
