Simeon Hardy needed just twenty seconds to dispose of Patrick Boston, in the process erasing Troy Lewis’ two minutes knockout record against Rudy Fraser in an earlier edition of the ProAm boxing card, when action in the 9th edition of that programme concluded at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) Friday evening.
Shawn Cox was also in a dangerous mood, dishing out a two fisted attack to Anthony Augustin that floored him and forced the third man to wave off the contest at 1:10secs of the first frame.
Mandessa Moses was also forced to endure a stern test before she eventually gained a close decision over Trinidadian Leann Boodram while Mark Austin also had to work hard for the eventual unanimous decision win over Barbadian, Revlon Lake.
Boodram, who hails from a boxing family in Trinidad and Tobago, started the contest in an aggressive mood, drifting Moses back with several wallops. Moses bided her time and responded with several salvoes of her own but it was clear that Boodram had taken the first stanza.
Moses worked herself into a nice rhythm in the second frame and matched the Trinidadian’s blows but her efforts did little to wane Boodram’s aggression. By the end of the second round, both fighters began to show signs of the hectic battle. Boodram had sustained a cut over her eyes that necessitated the doctor’s intervention while Moses had picked up a bump on her forehead compliments of a Boodram right cross.
The difference in determination and fitness became apparent in the last round when Moses upped the ante, drifting the Trinidadian backwards. Even then Boodram refused to give up and finished the bout like a warrior.
After the bout Moses acknowledged the pluck and determination of the Trinidadian. She said that she was surprised by the power of the petite boxer and admitted that her injury emanated from a legitimate blow.
Mark Austin also found the awkward style of Lake a bit worrying but the Guyanese still managed to pull out all the stops to win the bout.
Clive Atwell was his usual classy self against Cecil Smith, hitting him at will, many times without a response. At the end of the lopsided bout the general consensus was that Atwell had won hands down. All three of the judges concurred.
The next edition of the ProAm boxing card would be staged on Friday November 26.
