Dear Editor,
After Janet Jagan had stolen the entire top of the slate from under the nose of the entire Exco of the PPP, in 1997, she proceeded to Kitty Market Square to announce the decision to the country. I went with my wife to the rally.
Previously, I had been told by one person, that he was being asked to chair the said rally and that he was not going to do so.
I was in company with Ramjattan when we were told this. Just prior to this, another minister had told me that Cheddi had requested him to serve for one year and he was done with the Cabinet after that.
I had gone to his office to show him my report for the Guyana Chronicle on the real story behind the collapse of the Charity Wharf, into the Pomeroon River, He begged me not to attempt to publish that story, as his Ministry was the subject Ministry, but he needed not fear on that score. The Editor refused to publish the story. I sought the help of the Mirror Editor – same result.
Next day the Minister was singing the praise of Janet Jagan from the podium of the rally while the other chap was chairing the rally. My wife had told me these chaps would betray me. She was right.
Janet took the mike and announced the three names, herself, Sam Hinds and Bharat Jagdeo, to the crowd. Then she went into overdrive.
To give the choices legitimacy before the crowd, Janet Jagan claimed that Cheddi Jagan had signed a “note indicating that he wanted her to become President in the event of his demise”.
This she claimed was done in the presence of her son Joey, while Cheddi was lying in his dying bed at Walter Reed Hospital in the USA. There were no independent observers to this request.
I was standing at the time with Feroze Mohamed and Rohit Persaud. I was so enraged that I immediately told my wife that we were leaving the Rally and that is the last straw for me in the PPP or near anything PPP.
The PPP administration now finds itself in the same position of the PNCR in 1992, hated across the land.
In fact the PNCR operatives are getting bolder by the day, with the increasing crescendo of letters by them, in the nation’s press. Everyone, including the decrepit PNCR are sensing the weakness of the PPP Government and its impending defeat at the upcoming General Elections in 2011.
