‘Golden Jaguars’ Captain Howard Lowe has complimented his players and the technical Staff of the senior team for doing a fine job which saw the Guyanese flagship team ending Stage one Group C of the Digicel Caribbean Cup with an unblemished record of 3 wins from as many matches.
The Guyanese team defeated host nation and old rivals Suriname 2-0 (October 17), got past the Netherlands Antilles 3-2 (October 15) and St. Lucia 1-0 (October 13) at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport following their group triumph, Pollard first offered thanks to the Almighty for guiding them through Stage one successfully which was very important to the team as a booster going into the second stage in Trinidad.
“I would also like to thank the Guyanese people for the support especially those who took that long journey to Suriname driving to be there for us.”
Commenting on the performance of his players, Pollard said he was happy with the way they played even though they were not 100% but they adapted well and gave a good account of themselves.
Going forward, Lowe stated, “We have to keep the focus, train harder and we will reap the rewards. As we go forward we will need strong players to help the team and Puerto Rico Islanders player Chris Nurse will be a good asset to the team, he is a very important player and I would be happy to have him along with other players who can help us win in Trinidad.”
Lowe also singled out the coaching staff for kudos. “Head Coach Wayne Dover and his support staff all did a fantastic job with the team and I must commend them for their efforts, also the Guyana Football Federation for the important role they continue to play.”
Guyana will play host Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti and St. Vincent & the Grenadines from November 2 – 6 with the top two teams moving on to the finals of this year’s Digicel Caribbean Cup set for Martinique. (Franklin Wilson)
