Problems recently developed at the Suddie Hospital mortuary have forced the managerial committee to close the facility. The problem identified by a member of the hospital committee, was traced to the cooling unit.
Essequibians are now complaining that they have to take their dead relatives to the Oscar Joseph Hospital mortuary at Charity.
One woman who recently lost her husband approached the Suddie Hospital mortuary for storage, only to be told that the service is not accessible.
According to the committee member, it was learnt that an accessory component to the freezing unit has to be replaced and that parts may have to be imported, something that could force the prolonged closure of the mortuary.
On Friday at Suddie, the gate leading to the facility was closed. When asked to comment on the issue, Duhdnauth, who identified himself to be the supervisor of the facility, said that the facility was closed a week ago due to technical problems.
Regional Councillor Archie Cordis, who said that he was alerted to the problem after one of his friends had died, said that he is alarmed about the whole issue, more so about it not being brought up at the recent statutory meeting.
The frustrated councillor said that most of his colleagues are not aware of the grave issue. “An important facility like this should not have been a secret to Essequibians, since it is far more expensive to carry a dead to Charity.
“If the situation continues in this manner, persons would be forced to bury their deceased faster or may have to soon venture to Georgetown to provide them with their final rights.”Last year the parlour was again closed because of a faulty freezing unit. That problem caused a number of corpses to decompose due to the inefficiency of electricity supply. The facility had to be fuelled by a generator.
At Charity families are told to walk with ice to preserve their corpse, since that facility is far smaller than the Suddie mortuary and may not accommodate all the corpses being presented.
